Indications/Uses
Prevention of pain in otorhinolaryngology; obstetrics; introduction of instruments, tubes & catheters into the resp & digestive tract; dental practice.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Otorhinolaryngology 3 metered doses for puncture of the maxillary sinus or other minor surgical procedures. Obstetric during delivery Up to 20 metered doses (lidocaine base 200 mg) Introduction of instruments, tubes & catheters into the resp & digestive tract Up to 20 metered doses (lidocaine base 200 mg) for procedures in pharynx, larynx & trachea. Max: 400 mg. Application mainly to the larynx, trachea & bronchi Should not exceed 20 metered doses (lidocaine base 200 mg). Dental practice 1-5 metered doses to the mucous membranes. Childn Max: 3 mg/kg. Mainly in larynx & trachea Reduce dose to 1.5 mg/kg.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to amide-type local anaesth.
Special Precautions
Paralyzed patients under general anaesth; patients w/ wounds or traumatized mucosa in the region of the proposed application; partial or complete heart block; advanced liver disease or severe renal dysfunction, elderly patients. Oropharyngeal use may interfere w/ swallowing & thus enhance the danger of aspiration. Avoid contact w/ the eyes. Numbness of the tongue or buccal mucosa may increase the danger of biting trauma. May temporarily impair locomotion & coordination. Concomitant use w/ antiarrhythmic drug class III (eg, amiodarone). Should not be used on cuffs of endotracheal tubes made of plastic. May be porphyrinogenic.
Adverse Reactions
Local irritation, allergic reactions, acute systemic toxicity.
Drug Interactions
Additive toxic effects w/ agents structurally related to local anaesth eg, antiarrhythmics (eg, mexiletin & tocainide). Use in caution w/ antiarrhythmics class III, cimetidine or β-blockers.
